The parameters of a good assessment
- Average weight of your horse: see the page “Estimating your horse’s weight”
- Level of work of your horse (resting, light, moderate or heavy work)
Horses on artificial bedding (shavings, flax, etc.)
No straw in the stable to feed the horses (less chewing activity, risk of cellulose deficiency, etc.)
- Provide larger quantities of hay: 7-8 kg per day
- Choose a combination feed with a safe formula in terms of protein/cellulose balance (S 100, S 200, S 250)
How to assess the nutritional content?
Nutritional content in the basic ration, excluding combination feed:
- Type of basic ration (straw, hay, cereals, grass)
- Characteristics: quality of hay, composition of grass (seasonal effect)
- Exact quantities fed
- Nutrient content from combined feeds to supplement the basic ration
Typical ration calculation:
Horses weighing 500 kg, performing moderate work: 1-2 hours per day, walking, trotting, cantering, require:
- 7.5 UFC (16875 Kcal or 70,6 MJ)
- 480 g MADC
- 10 to 12 kg DM
