The Dutch Draught Horse

Breeding of the only heavy breed developed in the Netherlands began in the 19th century with Dutch Zeeland draft mares crossed with the Brabançon (Belgian Heavy Draft) and Belgian Ardennes. In 1914, the Royal Society of Dutch Draught Horses was founded.

With a very good character, calm and docile, they are extremely powerful, very resistant, strong, and relatively agile. Their gaits are easy and very active.

A heavy draught, it excels at hauling heavy loads. They compete successfully in agricultural competitions and are appreciated for farm work.

Rather small head. Straight profile. Broad forehead. Pronounced gauntlets. Short ears. Large eyes. Extremely massive, muscular, stocky, brevis-type body. Thick, muscular neck. Low, broad withers. Strong, sloping shoulders. Deep, broad chest. Strong back. Very muscular loins. Powerful hindquarters. Abruptly sloping croup. Short, strong, robust limbs. Wide joints. Dewlap. Large feet with solid horn. Tail set low. Coat: bay, gray, chestnut. Size: 1.60 to 1.72 m.
