The Dole-Gudbrandsdal horse

This Norwegian draught horse is the result of the combination of two formerly distinct breeds, the Dole and the Gudbrandsdal. Its origins are said to be close to those of the Dales and Fell. It is said to derive from Celtic ponies with an addition of Friesian blood.

It has been influenced by the Thoroughbred (notably by the stallion Odin, imported in 1834), the Arabian and various breeds of Trotter (Norfolk) or heavy draft. A lighter variety, the Norwegian Trotter or Trotter Dole, derived from Trotter blood, has been recognized since 1941. The Dôle-Gudbrandsdal contributed to the development of the North Swedish.
