The Murgese horse

The Murgese or Murgie horse is the result of crossbreeding horses from the Marges region of Puglia, Italy, with Arabian and Barbe stallions. This saddle horse, threatened with extinction, was saved in the 1930s, but today’s Murgese is certainly different from the ancient type.

Docile, this horse is active, lively, energetic, hardy, and resistant.

Utilisations du cheval

This light-draught saddle horse, improved by the Thoroughbred, is now oriented towards equestrian leisure activities. It is also used to produce mules.

Morphologie du cheval

Light head with straight or slightly convex profile. Small ears. Medio line body type. Slightly rounded neck. Fairly high withers. Sloping shoulder. Loins wide and short. Croup long, broad, and slightly sloping. Short, strong limbs. Wide joints. Cannon, short pasterns. Solid hoof. Coat: jet black, gray, with black or dark bay head. Abundant mane. Size: 1.45 to 1.55 m.
