The Salernitano horse
The breed developed in the 18th century from Neapolitan mares of Beard and Andalusian descent living in Campania (Italy), who were crossed with Andalusian and other stallions. The stud was closed in 1874 with the advent of the Republic. It was resumed at the beginning of the twentieth century, by crossing with Arabians and Thoroughbreds to obtain a good saddle horse. Around 1900, his former name, Persano, was replaced by Salernitano or Salerno. He contributed to the creation of the Italian Saddle.
