The Schleswig horse
Agricultural horse, used to pull streetcars and buses.
Caractère et aptitudes du cheval
With an excellent, gentle temperament, this horse is very hardy and lively. The gait is good and the movement energetic.
Utilisations du cheval
This draught horse originated in Schleswig-Holstein, a German state that was once part of Denmark. This explains why the Schleswig has common origins with the Trait Danois or Jutland, especially as both breeds were decisively bred around 1860 by the Suffolk Punch stallion, Oppenheim. In the 19th century, Thoroughbred stallions, Yorkshire Coach (an extinct breed) and Cleveland Bay were used. In the 20th century, two stallions were used, one Breton, the other Boulonnais, and new infusions of Jutland blood took place.
The breed’s Stud Book was created in 1891.
