How to choose the right feed for recreational horses?

Recreational horses do not require high energy intakes. Since they are worked for recreational purposes, they do not have the same needs as competition horses, racehorses or horses that work intensively every day.

The aim is to guarantee top performance from horses, whether ridden for pleasure, sport, competition or racing, or used for breeding.

The ideal diet for this type of horse will therefore be a moderate energy intake that will be easier to modulate by adjusting the quantities fed. However, it is important to provide them with everything they need for the work they must do.

The ideal diet for a sport or leisure horse

The diet of a sport or leisure horse must provide the necessary energy for him to produce the required efforts. Generally, the leisure horse practices a light or moderate activity. Therefore, its energy needs are not as important as those of a competition horse.

The basic diet of the sport or leisure horse will be forage, ideally of good quality and at will. However, not all horses can receive free choice forage. The recommended daily amount of hay for a 500kg horse is between 5 and 7.5kg depending on the richness of the hay. For example. It is recommended to divide the fodder intake to spread the consumption of fodder over the day as much as possible

It is difficult to cover the needs of a working horse with forage alone. We advise then to introduce one or several meals of concentrated feed in their diet. Royal Horse has developed a specific feed for sport and leisure horses, the S range. It contains cereals, minerals and vitamins. In particular vitamin E which allows an antioxidant action, and which also takes part in the cellular protection. It also contains prebiotics to guarantee good digestive immunity, which is essential for the daily well-being of the horse. The S200 feed comes in pellet form, while the S250 feed comes in flake form.

For sport and leisure horses with occasional physical activity, the S100 horse feed is ideal. It is low in energy and low in starch (<15%), which avoids any potential digestive problems for the horse.

The ideal diet for senior horses

Aging sport and leisure horses will start to need special diets after about 20 years of age. Some digestive problems may appear, sometimes accompanied by weight loss, so it is important to monitor their condition. In addition, certain dental problems may prevent proper ingestion of feed and food.

To avoid this, regularly call an equine dentist to monitor the good condition of their teeth. You should also choose a diet enriched with prebiotics to guarantee a good digestive transit. Royal Horse’s senior feed, S350, has been designed to meet the specific needs of older horses with MOS type pre-biotics and artichoke extracts to improve gastric secretion. This feed also contains a high level of quality proteins to help maintain muscle mass and is also supplemented with vitamin E (higher than for S200 or S250 feeds), which provides an antioxidant effect and helps to protect the muscles of aging horses and prevent aging.
